About Lakelubbers

About Us

A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth's eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature. - from "Walden, Or Life In The Woods" by Henry David Thoreau, 1854. [See Thoreau's favorite lake.]

Lake Lovers Love Lakelubbers.

The idea for Lakelubbers was born six years after Brian and Lisa Raub, co-founders, moved to Virginia's Smith Mountain Lake in 2001. They created travel-related websites about vacation rentals in 1996 (Vacation Villa Referral Center and then A1Vacations.com), Smith Mountain Lake in 1998, and Watauga Lake, Tennessee in 2006. In 2007, they began building Lakelubbers' worldwide database of lakes and reservoirs for lake enthusiasts like themselves. This lakes database became the foundation for Lakelubbers' "Lakes for Vacation and Recreation", an online directory for lake lovers.

Lakelubbers covers more than 2,000 vacation and recreation lakes worldwide, with about 1,600 USA lakes - in all 50 states - and 500 lakes in 80 other countries. We feature vacation, recreation, and relocation information about the world's best-known lakes - with lake vacation rentals, lake statistics, fishing species, activities summaries, and much more. We can help you to find your next vacation destination or a retirement home - on and near inland lakes.

If your favorite recreational/vacation lake offers public access and is not yet described on Lakelubbers, please suggest it. We also welcome you to contribute photos of your favorite lakes.

Lakelubbers offers vacation rental advertising - starting at $20. With more than one million visitors annually, Lakelubbers helps lake vacationers find lake homeowners. Check these lake vacation rentals.

Lakelubbers looks forward to making you a "lake enthusiast", and to providing you with the information you need to plan your next lake vacation - or to retire to a beautiful spot with a lake view - anywhere in the world that you'd like to go.

What lakes does Lakelubbers cover? Lakelubbers.com features lakes that provide significant recreational and vacation opportunities. We also include some unusual lakes and "lakes in the news." There's no "official" minimum size (in surface area or volume) that defines a lake, but 75% of the lakes on Lakelubbers have a surface area of one square mile (640 acres) or more. The largest 40 of the world's lakes each cover millions of acres. 80 of Earth's lakes include more than 10 million acre-feet of water, and just one acre foot equals 325 million gallons! The world's deepest lake drops 5,314 feet - more than a mile - from its surface to 3,818 feet below sea level, while the world's highest elevated lakes sit more than 15,000 feet above sea level. And more than 40 of the world's lakes have shorelines that exceed 1,000 miles.

What's a Lakelubber? A Lakelubber is a person who loves lakes -- a connoisseur of inland bodies of water. "Lakelubber" is not yet in any dictionary ("landlubber" is), but we hope to remedy that. Lake Lovers Love Lakelubbers!
