Butternut Lake, Wisconsin, USA

Add to my ‘Favorite Lakes’ on Lakelubbers

At over three miles long, Butternut Lake in Price County, Wisconsin is a lake lover's paradise and a prime four season vacation destination. Created thousands of years ago by glaciers and fed by Butternut Creek, the first settlers in 1873 named the lake and creek due to the many butternut trees that grew in the area.

Today, Butternut Lake is a Class A muskie fishing lake that attracts eager fishermen waiting to catch their limit. Walleye, northern pike, small mouth bass, large mouth bass, crappie, perch, and bluegill also keep anglers busy baiting their lines. Local guides and tackle shops are available year round to offer advice and gear to make your fishing trip productive and memorable whether you fish on the water or the ice.

In the summer, families flock to Butternut Lake for the sandy beaches and swimming, boating, jet skiing, water skiing, canoeing and kayaking. Wintertime still sees plenty of family action as cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, and snowmobiling occupy the frozen lake area.

Lakefront real estate provides owners with an ever changing scene off their private decks. Bright sunny days with the green trees reflecting off the clear water in the summer, brilliantly colored foliage with scampering animals preparing for the winter in the fall, pristine snow covered ground and trees in the cold of winter, and the rebirth of the area each spring as the snow melts, the ice thaws, and wildlife is seen preparing for the birth of their young.

A short drive from Butternut Lake is Park Falls which boasts that with its sparse population and thousands of acres of outdoor adventure, their hometown provides visitors a great opportunity to "get away from it all" regardless of the season. In the warm months, the many lakes, streams and river provide opportunities for swimming and boating. Canoeing enthusiasts can enjoy a peaceful commune with nature on any of the many local lakes but the more experienced paddlers may want to try their luck on the white water of the Flambeau River. The cooler fall weather brings changing foliage and hunting. Due to its large habitat area for ruffed grouse, the area has earned the title "The Ruffed Grouse Capital of the World" and attracts numerous hunters each year; abundant deer, black bear, and waterfowl provide great hunting also. Two state wildlife areas, Hoffman Lake-Hay Creek Wildlife Area and Kimberly Clark Wildlife Area, provide nature lovers thousands of acres to view many species of birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Cold weather does not stop the fun as Falls Park is known as the "Snowmobile Trail Hub" which boasts over 500 miles of groomed trails and links to popular snowmobile trails. Cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, and tubing are available throughout the area. Nearby casinos, golf course, bowling, and parks add to the long list of neighborhood amenities.

Vacation rentals for Butternut Lake and Park Falls include cozy bed and breakfast inns, luxurious resorts, fully equipped condos, lakefront lodges, secluded cottages, and numerous campgrounds. Vacation homes are also available as many visitors have fallen in love with the year round adventure and purchased real estate for a second home and future retirement destination.
