Canadohta Lake: Description

Canadohta Lake, the second largest natural lake in Pennsylvania and Northwestern Pennsylvania's Best-Kept Secret, is located between Erie, Titusville, and Meadville. Now known and loved for its clean, clear spring-fed waters, the lake was originally formed by glaciers in the early ice age. The 168-acre lake is approximately 1/2 mile wide and 1-1/4 miles long. Canadohta Lake's average depth is 26 feet with a maximum depth of about 45 feet. The Canadohta Lake Authority lowers the lake level every fall as protection for the docks.

Canadohta Lake is maintained by the Pennsylvania Fish Commission, assuring its claim to be a Sportsman's Paradise. Famous for its year-round fishing, the lake hosts tournaments during all seasons, taking particular pride in its ice fishing tournament every February. Canadohta Lake is stocked annually with pan fish, bluegill, perch, sunfish, northern pike, muskellunge, walleye, smallmouth bass, and largemouth bass. Anglers are delighted to hear that big fish stories are no lie at Canadohta Lake.

Water activities are a perpetual favorite here at the lake, and boaters enjoy renting pontoon boats, paddle boats, and canoes from local marinas. And thanks to the 10 horsepower limit on Canadohta Lake, swimmers and boaters coexist in peace, so lay your beach towel out, and wade into the cool waters for a relaxing afternoon. There is a public beach at Elmwood Park and several private beaches.

When you're finished in the water for the day, check out the area's two miniature golf courses, art gallery, or take the kids to Canadohta Lake Park's Frog Pond, where they'll squeal with glee as they test out the giant waterside. And when evening rolls around, enjoy the sun setting over the waters as you enjoy a lakeside meal or, if that doesn't strike your fancy, cozy up with your family and a movie, order handmade pizza, and enjoy a comfortable evening in.
