Conneaut Lake: Description
Conneaut Lake, located between Pittsburgh and Erie, is the largest natural lake in Pennsylvania. The glacial lake was formed in the Pleistocene period when a large block of ice broke off of a receding ice front and was surrounded by earth and sediment. When the ice melted, the lake now called
Conneaut was born. The surface area of Conneaut Lake is approximately 947 acres. Its average depth is 19 feet with a maximum depth of 60 feet.
Conneaut Lake is perhaps best-known for its amusement park, the Conneaut Lake Park. Built in 1892 on the western shore of the lake, it is home to myriad rides and endless hours of family fun. The park was first called Exposition Park, beginning as a picnic area and slowly growing and
adding attractions. After a fire in 1908, the park was rebuilt and finally renamed Conneaut Lake Park in 1920. Children and adults alike delight in the ferris wheel, tilt-a-whirl, bumper cars, water rides, and roller coasters. In fact, the famous Blue Streak wooden roller coaster has
garnered fans from all over the world and is a not-to-be missed pilgrimage if you're in the Conneaut Lake area.
After you've enjoyed a fun-filled visit to the park, you'll be ready to experience the beauty of the sparkling lake waters that offer year-round entertainment. In the warm summer months, swimmers and water athletes find relief in the cool, deep waters. With no horse power limit on the lake, visitors and residents enjoy the breeze in their hair as they watch the scenery go by or pull a water skier behind them. Lazy afternoons are spent bathing in the sun, picnicking on the shores, and enjoying nature.
Fall months at Conneaut Lake are spent marveling at the orange, yellow, and red-painted countryside, smelling the crisp scent of autumn, and enjoying the annual Fall Pumpkinfest, complete with themed events, inflatable rides, a haunted train ride, and a pumpkin pirate ship cruise.
And as Fall fades into winter, temperatures drop and snow begins to fall, turning the area into a winter wonderland, perfect for sledding, snowshoeing, ice skating and snowman-building.
