East Silent Lake is located in Otter Tail County, Minnesota, with 328 watery acres and a maximum depth of 48 feet. The lake's 4.8-mile sandy shoreline is developed with homes, cabins, and resorts. Luxurious real estate properties and vacation rentals are readily available, many with stunning lakeside views and isolated locales. Connected to West Silent Lake via a drainage pipe, East Silent Lake is a part of the Otter Tail River Watershed. A rock barrier structure can be found at the lake's outlet to control water levels.
Fishing enthusiasts love angling East Silent Lake for walleye that commonly average 13 inches. Yellow perch, hybrid sunfish, bluegill, roam and rock bass are also present. The best place to look for walleye is in the center of the lake's long northern side. The rock pile toward the northeastern end of the lake is another favorite congregation spot for a number of different species.
With 15 feet of visibility, it is no wonder East Silent Lake is so well known for its recreational water activities, particularly scuba diving and snorkeling. Drifting along these sparkling shores in a kayak, you'll find visitors participating in an array of water sports such as boating, tubing, wake boarding and water skiing. On land, volleyball, tennis, golf and basketball are favorite summer sports, as it cross-country skiing during the winter. Wildlife viewing enthusiasts will enjoy looking for birds including bald eagles, turkeys and eastern bluebirds.
Because there are so many things to do at East Silent Lake, it is a popular camping destination for families. Most resorts and campgrounds offer equipment for paddle boating, row boating and canoeing for guests. Pontoons and motorboats for tubing and wakeboarding are also available. Kids will never tire of East Silent Lake's myriad activities, from mountain biking to bowling and barbecuing. Some even include daycare for children 12 and under, with programs like building sandcastles, making t-shirts and painting birdhouses. A teens' club also offers banana boat rides, nature hikes and scavenger hunts for kids between the ages of 13 and 17. Go-carts, mini-golf, and horseback riding can be found nearby.
Just a few miles west of East Silent Lake lies Maplewood State Park. The maple leaves transform into brilliant shades of red and orange during the autumn months. Camping facilities include electric sites, flush toilets and a dump station. Additionally, equine lovers will love "horse camping" overnight with their favorite animal.
In terms of recreation, Maplewood State Park is unparalleled: 13 miles of dedicated cross-country skiing paths, 20 miles of snowmobiling trails, 25 miles of hiking trails, 20 miles of horseback riding trails, and eight lakes and various ponds. Outdoor enthusiasts will never tire of exploring the preserve, and neither will guests passionate about wildlife watching. The 9,250-acre park is home to over 150 species of bird, 50 types of mammal, and 25 kinds of reptile and amphibian.
East Silent Lake is surrounded by towns that are just bursting with character. Otter Tail County hosts a variety of special events throughout the year, including art shows, music fairs, carnivals and community festivals. Frazee is close in proximity to the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, and is also allegedly home to the world's largest turkey. Nearby Pelican Rapids holds a similar record for the world's largest pelican. Casinos and water parks can additionally be found in other parts of Otter Tail County.
While East Silent Lake undoubtedly attracts families with children, it is also perfect for couples and individuals looking for active days and restful nights. With so many parks, hunting preserves, and bodies of water surrounding East Silent Lake, exploring the area certainly takes multiple trips. It is no wonder that so many vacationers consistently return, year after year.
