All About Green Valley Lake, PA

She stretches out on her towel on the dock at Green Valley Lake and feels the sun sink into her skin and her tension melt away. The only sound she hears is the giggling of her boys as they try to figure out how to maneuver the pedal boat. It sounds like they are going in opposite directions, but it will only be a matter of time before they are zipping back and forth across Green Valley Lake, moving as fast as their legs will carry them. For now she plans to lay here enjoying the sun and whatever peace is available.

Green Valley Lake covers three surface acres and is between four and sixteen feet deep. The lake is tucked away in southern Fulton County in the Allegheny Mountains and Valleys Region of south central Pennsylvania. It is less than two hours from both Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, D.C. making it the ideal spot for a quick weekend getaway. Warfordsburg is the nearest town. Established in December 1776 with a land grant of 100 acres to Joseph Warford, the town has grown to include restaurants and any amenities a visitor might need while at the same time maintaining its small town charm. There is real estate available for sale in the town and a few lakefront vacation rentals around Green Valley Lake. The lake’s size makes it most conducive to pedal boat and rowboat. There is, however, a floating dock, and the lake is stocked with bass, bluegill and catfish providing ample opportunities for any anglers in the family.

Settlement in Fulton County started around 1719, but it didn’t officially become a county until 1850. Originally intended to be called Liberty County, the name was changed to honor Lancaster, Pennsylvania native and inventor of the steamboat, Robert Fulton. Fulton County is in the gently rolling foothills of the Allegheny Mountains and includes over 50,000 acres of state forest. There is downhill skiing and cross country skiing in the county and miles of hiking trails easily accessible from Green Valley Lake.

Green Valley Lake is just north of the Mason-Dixon Line and an hour from the Anteitam Civil War Battlefield. It is the site of the bloodiest one day battle in American history; a fight orchestrated by Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union Major General George B. McClellan. The 12 hour battle was fought on September 17, 1862 and is considered a turning point in the Civil War. After the Union victory, General Lee retreated to Virginia and President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, but not before over 23,000 men were wounded or killed. Today the site is commemorated as the Anteitam National Battlefield and is part of the national park system. It includes a visitor center with a film and exhibit and visitors can take an eight and a half mile long self guided auto tour through the battlefield.

With a demeanor as tranquil and charming as its name, Green Valley Lake calls visitors to its peaceful valley year after year. Whether they are fleeing the noise and crowds of the city or just long for a simpler, restful spot to rejuvenate, Green Valley Lake is sure to provide exactly what they are looking for.
