Created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood control, hydropower, and water navigation, Hartwell Lake is now a vacation hub for water and nature lovers alike. The lake's ideal location, only two hours from Atlanta (Georgia) and Charlotte (North Carolina), attracts more than a million visitors every year. Flocking to the public parks, beautiful lake, marinas, and the varied flora and fauna that populate the 23,563 acres of land that surround the lake, visitors enjoy every inch of the crystalline waters.
There are truly myriad activities to indulge in at Hartwell, sure to scratch all your recreational itches. Certainly one of Hartwell Lake's most enjoyed activities is its water sports. In fact, some say that this is the best boating, fishing, and water skiing in all of Georgia and South Carolina. Water skiers find a favorite location in the Tugaloo River arm of the lake, as its clear, calm waters are widely known as the best on the lake for skiing and tubing. Anglers, dreaming of the fabled 50+ pound striped bass, bream, crappie, largemouth bass, hybrid bass, and striped bass, head over to the recommended Seneca and Tugaloo River branches. And if you're in the mood to sail, head on over to the lake's "Big Water" area, south of I-85.
After you've dipped your toes into Lake Hartwell's inviting waters, head back to land and enjoy the offerings of the 2+ million acres that make up the greater lake area.
