Horn Lake is located in Desoto County, Missippi and covers 1200 acres. The population of the area is approximately 25,000 and the town is named after Horn Lake.
The river lies three miles west of the town of Horn Lake and resembles a cow horn. It was a former riverbed of the Mississippi River and changed its course in the 18th century. In historical times the Chicksaw Indians inhabited the area. Hernando DeSoto and his party were the first Europeans to encounter the Chicksaws and wintered with them. Then the French explorer, LaSalle asked for their help on his journy to the Gulf of Mexico and then the area passed through Spanish and English rule and became American governed after the Revolutionary War. In 1832 the Chicksaws relinquished all claims by Treaty of Potmotoc to the land east of the Missippi River.
Settlers moving into the area cleared land and cultivated crops. The major crops were cotton and when the railroad was built this stimulated growth so the town has now doubled in size from what it was in the early 1900's.
