Lakelubbers: Freelance Jobs for Lake Writers

Lakelubbers.com needs a few part-time lake writers to help build our database of USA lakes during 2008, then worldwide in 2009. You'll work from home, when you have time available, as an independent contractor. Our writers typically work about 15 hours per week to produce 5-6 new lake write-ups, but you can work less if you wish. These jobs pay about $12/hour, and you won't pay a penny for gas or suffer a "morning commute". If you meet the qualifications below, please see "How to Apply".

Qualifications

• Excellent spelling, grammar, and writing skills are required.
• Your internet research skills must be very good. We will help you to improve your lake-specific research skills.
• You must pay careful attention to details. We need a high level of accuracy in our lake listings and require that you never violate copyrights.
• You must have a high speed internet connection, because this job requires extensive research via the web.

How to Apply

Follow these directions carefully to show us that you pay close attention to details.

1. To see the type of writing and level of statistical research that we expect, review at least 2 of these lakes: Smith Mountain Lake, Bull Shoals Lake, Lake Lanier, and Lake Norman.
2. Choose any USA lake that is NOT currently listed on Lakelubbers. Its surface area must be at least 640 acres. Research the lake via the internet, then write a description of it -- in your own words. Be very careful not to violate any copyrights.
3. Use the internet to find as many of these statistics as possible: surface area in acres, shoreline length in miles, normal elevation in feet above sea level, maximum and average depth in feet, volume in acre-feet, and completion year (if dammed).
4. Create a new account, then "Login" to Lakelubbers, then "Add a Lake" using your text and statistical research. You MUST be logged in to apply. Do not add any photos unless you personally own their copyrights.
5. After you have completed the steps above, call Lisa Raub at 540-721-3327 during regular business hours to request a review of the lake you have added. We will review it, usually within 7 days. If we like your write-up and statistical research, we'll make you an offer, mail you a Lakelubbers cap (below) ... and pay you for your lake write-up. If we decide not to hire you, or you can't accept our offer, we'll delete your lake write-up.

Lakelubbers: Jobs for Lake Moderators

We need volunteer "lake experts" to gather and to moderate directories and other information submitted for each lake. Moderators can take responsibility for one nearby or frequently visited lake. Moderators add local information that's important to lake visitors: restaurants, hotels, bait & tackle shops, boat ramps, marinas, and more. They also help to start Lakelubbers messaging forums for their designated lake.

Moderators earn the opportunity to highlight one business or non-profit organization in the Lakelubbers directory for their moderated lake, increasing their organization's visibility. We especially welcome local Chambers of Commerce as lake moderators. There can be one or two moderators for each lake.
