One of 101 lakes in Kitsap County, Washington, Kitsap Lake is conveniently located just three miles west of the city of Bremerton. This lake, which is considered a part of the Seattle and Puget Sound tourism region, boasts a maximum depth of 29 feet and a normal elevation of 156 feet. A relatively small body of water, it has a surface area of 250 acres and an average depth of 18 feet.
Kitsap Lake features two public entrances, restrooms, a dock, and a 12-foot concrete boat launching ramp that are all maintained by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. The agency also runs a bald eagle tracking program designed to promote the proliferation of this previously endangered species throughout the area. Nearby, Kitsap Lake Park provides an ideal access point to the lake, with its four acres of developed land, 30 acres of wetlands, and half-mile of freshwater shoreline. Amenities include a fishing pier, boat launch, barbeque, and picnic tables.
Widely visited for its outdoor recreation, Kitsap Lake is perfect for kayaking, swimming, and year-round fishing. Lily pads, floating fallen branches, and abundant docks create ideal hiding places for an impressive variety of fish, including rainbow trout, bluegill, brown bullhead catfish, black crappie, pumpkinseed sunfish, cutthroat trout, and largemouth bass. Locals recommend using spinner baits, black jigs and floating rapalas. The lake also hosts a number of thrilling boat racing contests each year.
Several hiking and biking trails are available near Kitsap Lake, ranging in intensity from beginner to expert. The Clear Creek Bike Trail is a leisurely route that connects the Silverdale commercial center with various residential neighborhoods; conversely, the extreme Mosquito Fleet Trail winds for a lengthy 113 miles along the east Kitsap Peninsula, touring the area's most notable historical landmarks.
Many other exciting activities can be experienced just a short drive from Kitsap Lake. The Puget Sound encompasses some fabulous scuba diving spots, providing unique opportunities to observe a delightful array of marine life - including sea otters, octopi and sea slugs. Adrenaline-pumping white water rafting excursions are possible down the tough and foamy Big Quilcene River. Golf, frisbee golf, basketball, and mixed softball games are other popular local pastimes, as is geocaching. Nearby, Chico Creek hosts a salmon run each autumn, and downtown Bremerton is home to an annual Blackberry Festival each September. Notable cultural highlights include the Aurora Valentinetti Puppet museum, the Bremerton Community Theatre, and the Kitsap Historical Museum.
Lake Kitsap's beauty and range of activities has made it an extremely desirable place, both to live and to visit. Due to its extensive popularity, real estate and vacation rentals are at hot commodity around this cozy Washington lake.
