All About Lake Berkley, FL

Lake Berkley is the epitome of a Kissimmee-area vacation resort. Located only 10 miles from the Disney World complex, Lake Berkley contains a resort community of luxury villas set among three ‘fishing lakes’, the largest of which is 13-acre Lake Berkley. Lake Berkley is a small natural lake that has been modified in recent years to accommodate the resort community that shares its name. Located only a mile from Kissimmee Municipal Airport, Lake Berkley is a convenient vacation for the family that wants to visit the theme park attractions and possibly find time to fish West Lake Tohopekaliga five miles away. Conveniently located in the East Central Region of Florida, many of the villas available at Lake Berkley contain as many as seven bedrooms, ideal for an extended family or friends vacation. All possess private pools, so the lack of swimming in Lake Berkley will never be a problem. Developed entirely since the turn of the century, the gated resort itself contains tennis court, basketball court, billiards, table tennis, playground, a communal pool with kiddie splash pool and, on little Lake Berkley’s eastern shore, a sugar sand beach, volleyball court, barbecue area and fishing pier. A nature trail around two sides of the lake provides space to jog or simply enjoy the ducks and cranes that often visit the lake.

Although Lake Berkley has been stocked with bluegill, crappie, catfish and largemouth bass, the serious angler will head for West Lake Tohopekaliga or, Lake Toho as it is known locally. Lake Toho has been called the #1 trophy bass fishing lake in the United States and local guides are available for hire to make sure the first-time visitor catches a few big ones. Close to shopping and convenience stores, Lake Berkley also makes the ideal home base for outlet shoppers. Besides the factory stores outlet, Disney Downtown offers a wide variety of specialty stores and one-of-a-kind shops. A short distance away on International Drive, two open-air markets (Mercado and Point Orlando) offer local crafts, art and specialty clothing. Just a few miles away the Florida Mall, Orlando’s largest, houses 245 shops. If it isn’t found here, it probably cant be found!

The younger members of the family, and perhaps the older ones as well, will want to head for the Disney theme parks. Besides the well-known Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Epcot Center, the Disney family of attractions includes Disney-MGM Studios, River Country Water Park, Pleasure Island, Blizzard Beach Water Park, Typhoon Lagoon and many other smaller attractions. Nearby is the world-famous Sea World, Wet ‘N Wild, Gatorland and the Holy Land Experience. The Lake Berkley area is ideal for the sports fan, who can often find scheduled games and activities at Disney’s Wide World of Sports. Cracker Jack Stadium, completed in 2002, is the spring training home of the Atlanta Braves baseball club and the Orlando Magic play approximately 40 of their regular-season games in the 17,500-seat TD Waterhouse Center.

Outdoor activities are a joy in central Florida’s pleasant climate. Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando offers swan paddleboats, a playground and an amphitheater where concerts are scheduled. There are a wide variety of golf courses in the area along with miniature golf for the youngsters. Those with a yen to visit a pristine natural beach can visit Canaveral National Seashore an hour and a half to the east. A few miles south of Lake Berkley, the Disney Wilderness Preserve, a wetland mitigation area managed by the Nature Conservancy, holds 12,000 acres of trails and interpretive signage. The preserve is a favorite among bird watchers, particularly during the annual migrations that bring many northern species to the wetlands.

Near Lake Berkley, the Kissimmee Air Museum with its variety of beautifully restored aircraft will delight aviation buffs. The Orlando area is a treasure trove of unusual museums, with a Ripley’s Believe-It-Or-Not Museum, WonderWorks – called an amusement park for the mind, and the Orlando Science Center. Other museums near Lake Berkley include the Orlando Museum of Art, the Orange County Regional History Center and Trainland International Train and Trolley Museum. Local and exotic flora and fauna can be enjoyed at the Harry P Leu Botanical Gardens, with large gardens of beautiful camellias and at the Central Florida Zoological Park.
