Lake Cypress Springs is a beautiful 3,461-acre reservoir located eight miles southeast of Mount Vernon in the rolling hills and "Piney Woods" area of Franklin County in Northeast Texas. The sprawling, spring-fed body of water offers excellent fishing, water sports, picnic areas, campgrounds and a near constant water temperature of 72 degrees.
An impoundment on Big Cypress Creek, Lake Cypress Springs is a haven for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts. The lake has been cleared of timber and brush to promote all kinds of recreation. Portions of the lake are zoned for fishing only, and anglers will find abundant largemouth bass, walleye, spotted bass, white bass, crappie, channel catfish and bluegill. The record for largemouth bass stands at 10.38 pounds. The lake stretches for seven miles and measures just over two and a half miles at its widest point. A maximum depth of 56 feet makes the lake an excellent place for boating, waterskiing and swimming. On the other side of the Lake Cypress Springs Dam, anglers will find Lake Bob Sandlin which offers an additional 9,400 acres of water and 640-acre Bob Sandlin State Park.
Lake Cypress Springs is surrounded by five public parks which offer camping, RV areas, hiking trails, swimming beaches, marinas, picnic facilities and public access to the crystal clear water. The majority of the homes on the lake are weekend residences for people living in Franklin, Collin, and Dallas counties. Private homes and real estate for rent and purchase can be found around the 44.5 miles of wooded shoreline. Eagles are often spotted during winter months, and a variety of birds and wildlife can be viewed year round. Golfers will enjoy the Cypress Creek Country Club which offers a 9-hole golf course nestled in rolling hills and pine trees.
The closest community to Lake Cypress Springs is Mount Pleasant, a typical charming Texas Main Street city. Named for its location in the beautifully wooded hills, the town offers accommodations, antique shops, boutiques, restaurants and tearooms. If you need to purchase sporting goods to enjoy the abundant outdoors, Mount Pleasant businesses offer everything from fishhooks to personal watercraft.
Northwest of Lake Cypress Springs, visitors will find the historic city of Mount Vernon, located halfway between Dallas and Texarkana. Mount Vernon offers a number of motels, relaxing Bed & Breakfasts, historic homes, an active Main Street with museums, a cultural arts center, and plenty of opportunities for shopping and dining. Be sure to wear your walking shoes and keep your eyes peeled for that unique gift or treasure in one of the many antique shops in town. For nature lovers, two nature centers offer marked trails and the chance to observe indigenous wildlife and beautiful flora and fauna.
The city of Pittsburg sits east of Lake Cypress Springs and offers two state parks and an abundance of water sports on nearby lakes. Designated as an historic Main Street City in 1986, downtown Pittsburg offers historic homes, antique shops, clothing stores, museums, gift shops and a 1950's style soda fountain. A prayer tower in the center of town features Paccard bells from France that chime every hour. Accommodations can also be found in town.
Best known for stunning Lake Cypress Springs, Franklin County sits in the middle of some of the top fishing lakes in the state. In addition to the beauty of the lakes, Franklin County offers opportunities for camping, picnicking, golfing, and hiking.
