Nestled between Fredericksburg and Culpeper, Virginia, Lake of the Woods is a private residential community consisting of two lakes. Located in Central Virginia's Orange County, Lake of the Woods offers a calm reprieve from the hustle and bustle of city life. Since the lake was developed primarily as a residential and recreational community, there are year-round activities and amenities available to members of the Lake of the Woods Association.

Lake of the Woods was originally developed by Virginia Wildlife Clubs in 1967 and then later by the Boise Cascade Corporation. In 1972 Lake of the Woods Association assumed ownership and control of the lake community. There are two lakes located within Lake of the Woods, the Main Lake and Keaton's Lake. 500-acre Main Lake was created upon construction of Veterans Memorial Dam. 35-acre Keaton's Lake, also known as Fishing Lake, was created when Keaton's Run Dam was built. The larger Main Lake has seven lake access points, eight beaches, and two marinas. Keaton's Lake has one public access location and one beach. There is also a small pond at the front gate that is used for the annual children's Fishing Tournament. Fishing is permitted on both lakes at Lake of the Woods. With catch and release method being encouraged, anglers will have ample opportunity to catch largemouth bass, blue gill, yellow perch, channel catfish and walleye.

Lake of the Woods is 60 to 90 minutes from Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia. The lake offers residents a refreshing retreat after a hard day of work. For those wishing to find a retirement home or vacation retreat, Lake of the Woods homes cover about 2,600 acres. This private gated community provides 24 hour security and its own Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

Boating and swimming are popular Lake of the Woods activities. The lake offers two outdoor swimming pools for those who do not wish to swim in the lake. In addition, there is a PGA golf course, an Equestrian Center for horseback riding, tennis courts, a Clubhouse, and Campgrounds. Lake of the Woods also has a Community Center that offers a number of parks, a playground, and even horseshoe pits. The youth may enjoy the soccer fields and baseball and softball fields while they have a good time with their friends.

Every lot owner is a member of the Lake of the Woods Association with vehicle and boat registration. Identification cards give owners access to lake amenities. Residents may also purchase annual guest passes for immediate family members.

Lake of the Woods residents may enjoy the rich and tragic history that surrounds them. The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, which is the second largest military park in the world, is in close proximity to the Lake of the Woods. The land that makes up the Military Park was the bloodiest landscape in North America during the Civil War. The visitor center, driving trails and walking trails provide information on the Civil War battles that were fought on the land that is now the Military Park.

Conveniently located with resort amenities, Lake of the Woods makes an excellent choice for relocation or vacation living.
