Lake Placid: Description
Lake Placid, nestled into the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, stretches out over 2173 acres and boasts an average depth of 52 feet and a maximum depth os 151 feet. Famous as the location of the 1932 and 1980 Olympics, Lake Placid is a four-season playground, bursting with life and activity year-round.
For those visiting in the summer, the call of the great outdoors cannot be ignored. If you'd like to get some exercise, then the lake invites you to try your hand at canoeing or kayaking its crystal blue waters. If fishing is your pleasure, then you can look forward to catches of speckled trout, yellow perch, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. For the valiant at heart, white water rafting in the Hudson River Gorge -- one of the top 10 white water rafting courses in the USA -- is close by. And for those looking to just wile away the lazy hours, the sparkling lake awaits you.
While the summer is packed with things to do, the lake area really comes to life after the first snowflakes fall to the ground. Downhill skiing and snowboarding are perhaps two of the most popular winter activities. At Whiteface, guests encounter some of the best alpine skiing in the country. Boasting the steepest vertical drop east of the Rockies, it's no wonder that this mountain is the only ski area in the East to have hosted the Winter Olympics. And if downhill skiing isn't your pleasure, you'll find miles of fields and hills that convince you to cross-country ski your day away.
One of Lake Placid's biggest draws is its Event Calendar: no matter what time of year you plan your visit, there is almost certainly a special event to attend. Summertime hosts the Lake Placid Horse Show, the Lake Placid Marathon and Relay, the Lake Placid July 4th Parade and Celebration, and the Ford Ironman USA, among other popular activities. The winter will seduce you with promises of Winter Cup Sports and Events (held at the Olympic facilities), the Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge, the Annual Winter Carnival, and the Empire State Winter Games.
