Built for function but known for fun, Lake Tawakoni, Texas was formed after construction of the Iron Bridge Dam. Van Zandt County, Rains County, and Hunt County all share part of this lake's shoreline. The land under the water was once home to prehistoric Native Americans and many historic indigenous tribes that helped to give this lake its name. Tawakoni is of Native American origin, meaning "river bend among hills."

Completed in 1960 to provide water for municipal and to serve industrial purposes for the city of Dallas, Lake Tawakoni boasts almost 200 miles of shoreline. Owned and operated by the Sabine River Authority of Texas, the lake area provides both public and private recreational areas. With beaches for swimming, picnicking, and playing, area residents and visitors flock to the water for fun and relaxation.

Aquatic adventures include boating, fishing, waterskiing, jet skiing, canoeing, and kayaking. With marinas nearby, visitors and residents can rent boats and outfit themselves with bait and tackle to add to the day's enjoyment. Lake Tawakoni State Park offers visitors additional opportunities for swimming, hiking, boating, fishing, and mountain biking. Campgrounds, RV hookups, and lakeside parks offer a wide range of facilities for overnight excursions.
