Lake Waramaug: Description

Lake Waramaug is over four miles long, and in the Housatonic River Drainage Basin offering wonderful outdoor recreation and fine fishing for residents and visitors. Lake Waramaug is forty feet deep with a number of bays, inlets and coves. The Lake provides an ideal location for sport fishing, boating, and beautiful camping. The Lake is the second largest natural lake in Connecticut. Located in far west central Connecticut, it is in the towns of Warren, Washington and Kent. Except for the Lake Waramaug State Park, most of the lakeshore is private, residential development with some of the most expensive residences in the U.S. Warren and Washington are the two resident-only Town Beaches. Named one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, Lake Waramaug is cited in a recent book, 1000 Places to See Before You Die. The West Shore Road and the North Shore Road provide a beautiful scenic tour of the Lake environs.

Some of the outdoor activities available are:
· Swimming, Water-Skiing and Jet Boat piloting
· Canoe and Kayak Rental
· Fishing: Shore and from boats
· Waramaug State Park camping and picnicking
· Quiet Relaxation

In the past, a concrete dam was built to raise the lake level to its present height. Water to the lake is supplied from Sucker Brook, a number of small streams and groundwater entering the lake bottom. The outlet of Lake Waramaug is the East Aspetuck River.

Lake Waramaug provides stocked trout fishing as well as rock bass, large and smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow perch, sunfish, white perch and bullheads. The Lake covers over 600 surface acres and reaches a depth of over 40 feet. Located a little more than 20 miles north of Danville, Connecticut, Lake Waramaug is a favorite 'fishing hole' for both residents and visitors. Regulations require a foreign plant life inspection of any boats to be launched and a fee is charged. Inspection is either at the State Park or Washington Town Beach.

Beautiful campsites in secluded forests overlooking the Lake are the norm at Lake Waramaug State Park. In addition to the campgrounds, a well maintained beach and picnic areas complement the facilities. There are toilets and a car-top boat launch area - the only public launch site on the Lake. The Park rents canoes and kayaks for the intrepid paddler. The geocacher can search for over 100 geocaches nearby - happy hunting!

For the outdoor person, Lake Waramaug is a gorgeous jewel in west central Connecticut. Plan on stopping there for the beauty and outdoor enjoyment.
