Loon Lake is tucked in amongst the magnificent Adirondack Mountains. In 1892, in an effort to protect the water, timber and natural beauty of the Adirondack Mountains, the New York State Legislature established the Adirondack Park. In the years since, the wildlife and forests of the Adirondacks have flourished making the park wilder and more pristine than it was at the time of its creation. Nestled in the middle of the spectacular Adirondacks, Loon Lake is everything a mountain lake should be - clean, clear, surrounded by trees and full of fish.
Loon Lake is a wishbone shaped lake in Warren County, New York. Its primary inflows are streams that flow from Mountain Spring Lake to the north and Palmer Pond to the south west. With almost 600 acres of water there is plenty of room to fish, boat and swim in the cool mountain water. The lake is full of pumpkinseed, brown bullhead, northern pike and yellow perch. There are also healthy populations of largemouth bass and small mouth bass to challenge anglers. A town boat launch provides public access to the lake, and there is a full service marina with boat rentals available as well. There are several sand beaches, both public and private, along Loon Lake's tree-lined shore.
People have been fleeing the crowded cities and flocking to the Adirondacks since the 1880's, seeking the health benefits of the wilderness and clean mountain air. The Adirondack Park is mix of about half public and half private land. Covering over six million acres - more than the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, the Everglades and Glacier combined - it is the largest publicly protected tract in the contiguous United States. Miles of trails for horseback riding, hiking, backpacking and ATV and snowmobile use cross the mountains. In the fall the changing color of the leaves is extraordinary, and in the winter the snow blanketed mountains offer spectacular cross country and downhill skiing. Loon Lake is just a few miles from the downhill skiing on Gore Mountain. The area is dotted with villages and hamlets offering a mix of shops, restaurants and accommodations including quaint bed and breakfasts and rustic cabins. There are lakefront vacation rentals on Loon Lake and real estate available for sale.
Loon Lake is in the Town of Chester which includes the hamlets of Chestertown and Pottersville. Situated between the Schroon River and the Hudson River and to the west of Lake George, the Town of Chester is the self proclaimed "Crossroads of the Adirondacks." It was founded in 1799 as a farming community. Today it is an outdoor playground offering easy access to all the recreation opportunities of the Adirondacks. A cabin or one of the lakeside vacation rentals on Loon Lake is the perfect home base to make day trips on foot or by car into the surrounding mountains. Or simply stay put and soak in the peace, natural beauty and wildlife that inspired the creation of the Adirondack Park. Feet in hiking boots or toes in the clean mountain water, either choice promises an unforgettable vacation at Loon Lake.
