Located on what is called the "Quiet Side of the Northwoods", 187-acre Lower Kaubashine Lake is a beautiful, family oriented resort lake near Hazelhurst in Oneida County, Wisconsin. A year-round outdoor playground with over 1,000 lakes nestled among miles of winding trails, the Lower Kaubashine Lake area is an oasis for the outdoor enthusiast. Whether your preference is boating or fishing, biking or hiking, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, visitors can enjoy beautiful green scenery in spring and summer, spectacular colors in the fall, and the silent snow covered forests in the winter.

Lower Kaubashine Lake is one of several popular lakes in the Hazelhurst area. Katherine Lake, Upper Kaubashine Lake, Dollar Lake, Alice Lake and Lee Lake all offer visitors and residents unlimited water-related and outdoor recreation. Fishing on Lower Kaubashine Lake is always an adventure. With a maximum depth of 37 feet, the lake is well known for its musky, northern pike, walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie and bluegill. Public access to the lake is a carry-in canoe slide for canoes and small boats only. Many of the resorts and vacation rentals on the lake offer lake access and boat rentals for their guests. Just east of Lower Kaubashine Lake, Lake Katherine offers a public beach with a playground, a swimming area, a public boat launch, and picnic areas.

Accommodations on Lower Kaubashine Lake are plentiful. The lake's four miles of shoreline are mostly developed with beautiful real estate, vacation rentals, resorts, rustic cabins, cozy cottages, and bed and breakfasts. Camping is a wonderful way to fully enjoy the natural paradise, and there are several campgrounds in the area. An abundance of both primitive and traditional campsites can be found in the 7,000-acre Willow Flowage and Cedar Falls area located west of the lake. These areas also offer pristine wooded shorelines, fishing, hiking, biking, hunting, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Anglers will find an abundance of musky and walleye within the Willow's depths. A popular Northwoods springtime activity is to visit the rushing Cedar Falls on the Tomahawk River near the flowage to watch the musky spawn.

For walkers and bikers, the Bearskin State Park Trail is located just east of Lower Kaubashine Lake. Named for the Bearskin Creek, a tributary of the Tomahawk River, the trail stretches for 18 miles through the beautiful evergreen and hardwood forests of Oneida County, following a former railroad corridor. The Trail passes through the communities of Minocqua, Hazlehurst, Goodnow and Harshaw. The South Blue Lake rest area is at the center of the trail, and has water, rest rooms, picnic tables and grills. The trail is surfaced with compacted red granite suitable for walking and bicycling in summer, and snowmobiling in winter. Eagles, osprey, deer and raccoons are commonly seen along the route. The 6-mile Hiawatha trail follows the same rail bed and travels south from Heafford Junction to Tomahawk. More than 10 additional hiking, biking and birding trails are available within five to 20 miles of Lower Kaubashine Lake.

The scenic city of Hazlehurst sits between Lower Kaubashine Lake and Katherine Lake. Hazlehurst features two public parks for sports and picnics, several restaurants, shops, and many lodging options which remain open throughout the winter to accommodate skiers and snowmobile enthusiasts. With an average annual snowfall of 65 inches, winter sports are big. In the summer months, golfing becomes a main pastime with numerous golf courses in the area to challenge all skill levels. Hazelhurst public lands are open for hunting during scheduled seasons. White-tailed deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, and snowshoe hare are the primary game species.

The beautiful water, rolling hillsides and charming resort town of Hazlehurst combine to make Lower Kaubashine Lake a fantastic family getaway or place to call home. Hike and bike quiet woodland trails, boat, fish or swim in a number of beautiful lakes, or just sit back and relax on the private dock of your tranquil lakefront vacation rental. Whatever experience you choose, Oneida County's friendly communities have everything you need for a perfect vacation any time of year.
