Peckerwood Lake is a 4,000-acre private lake in Prairie County, Arkansas. The lake was formed in 1942 by a dam constructed on the Big La Grue Bayou for irrigation purposes. The lake is also used for recreation and is well known for its populations of channel catfish and crappie.

Fishing is the main activity on Peckerwood Lake. Sport fish in the lake include crappie, catfish, largemouth bass, and bream. There are two access areas for those wishing to launch a boat on the lake. Herman’s Landing is on the south side, and Red Barn Landing is located on the north side of the lake. RV camping and trailer rental is available at Red Barn Landing. Because Peckerwood Lake is a private lake, there is a fee to launch boats. The southern end of the lake is the deeper end. As you make your way north, the water gets shallower and there are many islands. On the other side of the dam is Hartz Reservoir which is a shallow and rather marshy body of water. Peckerwood Lake is closed to fishing from October 21 through February 1 for duck hunting.

Eating fish from Peckerwood Lake and most Arkansas lakes and streams is safe, but several counties have issued a fish consumption advisory. Check the link at the sidebar of this page to see which areas are affected.

Prairie County, located in Central Arkansas, was named for its landscape. The area is mostly flat farmland with rolling hills in the northwest corner. In addition to La Grue Bayou and Peckerwood Lake, there are a number of small lakes and reservoirs in the county. The scenic White River makes its way through the eastern section of the county on its way to the Mississippi River. All of the waterways in the area offer excellent fishing, especially catfish, and a wide variety of water recreation.

Although recreational activities on Peckerwood Lake are limited, there are a number of wildlife refuge areas nearby. North of the lake, the Wattensaw Wildlife Management has 19,184 acres of woods for deer and turkey hunting, open areas for dog training, lakes and ponds for fishing and gentle terrain for hiking. Primitive camping is allowed in designated areas. On the east side of the White River the 55,000-acre Cache River National Wildlife Refuge has numerous small lakes for fishing and boating. South of Peckerwood Lake, the White River National Wildlife Refuge contains over 300 lakes and ponds. Covering a total of 160,000 acres, the refuge offers fishing, boating, camping and hunting. For bird watchers, approximately two-thirds of the bird species found in Arkansas can be found in the refuge. Also north is the 33,700-acre Bayou Meto State Game Area known for its excellent duck hunting. The game area also offers primitive camping, an archery range and concrete boat ramps.

For lodging other than camping, the town of DeValls Bluff is located north of Peckerwood Lake. DeValls Bluff is a small town with vacation rentals, shops, and some excellent eateries. The town’s proximity to the White River and several wildlife refuges make it a haven for anglers, boaters, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts.
