For a tranquil setting located in the center of abundant outdoor activity, historic locations, and stunning scenery, Beebe Pond in Vermont's Rutland County is a perfect choice. This small lake has the Green Mountain National Forest as a backdrop that changes with the four distinct seasons of the area.
Beebe Lake's shoreline boasts real estate with some year round residences as well as cozy vacation homes available for rent, so that visitors may also enjoy a taste of this peaceful haven. To maintain the quiet tranquility, motor boats are not allowed on the lake, so paddlers can enjoy canoeing and kayaking along the water and immerse themselves in only the sounds of nature and lapping water against their vessel. Fishing for panfish, yellow perch, rainbow trout, and largemouth bass keeps anglers challenged from many prime fishing spots. Families spread blankets, set up chairs, and settle along the shore for a day of picnicking, swimming, and relaxation in the nature's beauty.
Beebe Pond is located in the town of Hubbardton, which has the distinction of being the site of the only battle of the Revolutionary War fought entirely in Vermont. A British invasion that came down from Canada was chasing the Continental Army across the state with the strategy of continuing to New York and dividing New England from the rest of the colonies. The local Green Mountain Boys stepped up to guard their town and slow down the Red Coats to give the Continental Army time to retreat and regroup. Although technically the British won the battle, they had to give up chasing the Americans to tend to their casualties. Today, the Battle of Hubbardton is recognized as one the most successful rear guard actions in American history. To commemorate the battle, a monument was erected at the site in 1859. Today, the battlefield is listed in the National Register of Historic Places with the battlefield beautifully preserved and a Visitor's Center that offers a museum and map of the battle for visitors' enjoyment and education. Each July the battle is reenacted and draws a large crowd to witness the historical event.
A short drive from Beebe Lake will take you to Half Moon Pond State Park, a camping-only park where campsites are located in a thick dense forest along the shore of Half Moon Pond. This, too, is a peaceful getaway with non-motorized boats only on the clear water and two small sandy beaches for swimming and sunbathing. For those who prefer a little more comfort, a few cabins and a lodge are available here as vacation rentals. The park is adjacent to Bomoseen State Park which borders Lake Bomoseen, the largest lake entirely within Vermont's borders. Here, visitors can enjoy camping, swimming, fishing, boating, picnicking, hiking, beaches, and a playground.
The Green Mountain National Forest covers more than 400,000 acres in southwestern and central Vermont that combines the rugged beauty of the scenic mountains intertwined with the peaceful villages of Vermont. The forest is home to three nationally designated trails including the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, Long National Recreation Trail, and the Robert Frost National Recreation Trail. These trails and others located in the forest are used for hiking, backpacking, and cross country skiing. Other activities in the forest include multiple alpine and Nordic ski areas, snowmobiling, camping, horseback riding, and biking. Nature enthusiasts will enjoy watching birds and other wildlife in the forest. Vacation rentals nearby include lodges, cabins, bed and breakfast inns, vacation homes, motels, condominiums, and campgrounds if you choose to leave your accommodation at Beebe Pond.
Golfing, stockcar racing, museums, and antiquing are available within a short drive from Beebe Pond. Whether you come for business or pleasure, the beauty and serenity of the area will turn your stay into a memorable trip. And with so much to do, to see, and to enjoy, arrange plenty of time in your schedule to do it all.
