With 70 miles of mostly wooded shoreline, Lake Maumelle is a nature lover's paradise. Lake Maumelle is located in the Central Arkansas Region about 12 miles northwest of Little Rock. The lake is controlled by Central Arkansas Water, and was completed in 1957 by damming the Big Maumelle River. The purpose of Maumelle Reservoir is to provide water for Little Rock, Arkansas. For this reason, recreational activities on and around Maumelle Lake are limited. However, anglers and sailboat enthusiasts will enjoy the peaceful surroundings as they take pleasure in a relaxing afternoon on the lake.
Since Lake Maumelle is Central Arkansas's main water supply, personal watercraft and primary contact are prohibited. To help protect water quality, Maumelle Lake is divided into two zones. Zone one, which is nearest the dam, is a restricted area that is off-limits. Zone two is open to fishing boats and sailboats during set hours. Local marinas offer public boat launches. Anglers will enjoy casting in their lines for white bass, black bass, hybrid striped bass, Kentucky bass, crappie, bream, catfish, and stripers, and can fish from their boats or from designated bank fishing areas. With the exclusion of personal watercraft, the waters of Lake Maumelle are calm and have become popular with many sailing regattas.
Although camping is not allowed on land surrounding Lake Maumelle, campers will be delighted to know that not too far away is Little Rock's only public campground, Maumelle Park. The campground is run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is located on the Arkansas River. Maumelle Park offers electric and pull-through campsites along with showers, a playground, a fishing pier and boat ramps with access to the Arkansas River.
After a day of fishing on Lake Maumelle, visitors may want to see some of the nearby sites. Hikers will enjoy a visit to Pinnacle Mountain State Park which is a day-use park. The cone-shaped peak of Pinnacle Mountain towers over a thousand feet above the Arkansas River Valley, and offers two hiking trails that guide hikers to the summit where they will be rewarded with a spectacular view. To the west of Lake Maumelle, nature lovers will find the 1.8 million acres of the Ouachita National Forest. With hundreds of miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and off-road vehicles as well as many developed recreation areas, visitors of Ouachita will find so much to do at this recreational wonderland.
With Lake Maumelle situated so close to Little Rock, the capital city of Arkansas, lake visitors can also enjoy the pleasures of city life. Little Rock offers golf, tennis and an extensive park system while also providing fine dining, lodging, and shopping. Real estate can be found by potential home buyers who enjoy all the city amenities while also having the beauty of Lake Maumelle so close by.
