All About Lake Wildwood, GA

For more than 35 years the waters of Lake Wildwood have been the center of life in the oldest private gated community in Bibb County, Georgia. This family-friendly community of over 1,700 homes and 5,000 residents is only 10 minutes northwest of Macon near the center of the state. With Atlanta only 70 miles northwest of Lake Wildwood, this gated community has access to all the amenities of the city while enjoying the beauty and attractions of lakeside living.

The large neighborhood of Lake Wildwood is managed by a Board of Directors operating under the constitution of the Lake Wildwood Association. With many amenities provided for lakeside residents, the board is busy overseeing a 22,000 square-foot clubhouse, Olympic-sized swimming pool, 18-hole miniature golf course, playgrounds, tennis courts and basketball courts.

Lake Wildwood is a dammed reservoir fed by Colaparchee/Calaparchee Creek and Rocky Creek. Access to Lake Wildwood’s waterways is limited to residents in good standing and their guests. At the south end of Lake Wildwood a white-sand swimming beach provides cool refreshing breaks on a hot summer day. The beach is available to residents and guests with proper identification. Because there are no lifeguards on duty, no one is permitted to swim alone and anyone under age 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Resident identification and boat decals are required of anyone launching a craft into Lake Wildwood. Boats are limited to a maximum engine size of 60 horsepower and maximum length of 21 feet for pontoon boats and 18 feet for all other boats. No wake zones have a maximum speed limit of 10 mph. Designated ski areas have a speed limit of 35 mph.

The waters of Lake Wildwood weave in and out of “fingers” and coves lining the lake’s six-mile shoreline. Despite heavy development, the small quiet coves provide a perfect setting for canoeing and kayaking. Lake Wildwood’s 186 acres are an open invitation to water skiers and fishermen. Trot lines are not permitted anywhere on Lake Wildwood. Only single fishing lines are to be used in pursuit of the lake’s bass, carp, brim and shad.

Whether residents are on, in or around Lake Wildwood a sense of community prevails. Lake Wildwood’s event calendar is always full. Neighbors volunteer with neighbors to organize events such as the community’s New Year’s Eve party, Super Bowl party, Easter egg hunt, July 4th beach bash, splish splash summer reading program, Halloween haunted house, turkey shoot and Christmas on the Lake.

Lake Wildwoods’ residents longing for a more “wild wood” experience need only drive five miles southwest to Lake Tobesofkee Recreation Area. Lake Tobesofkee contains three parks managed by Bibb County. Arrowhead Park offers a small swimming beach and playground perfect for the young ones. Campground amenities include electricity, water, dumps stations, boat ramps, bath facilities, laundry, grills and picnic tables. For family gatherings large or small, Claystone Park offers picnic pavilions (including a large climate controlled pavilion available for rent), restrooms, large sandy beaches and children’s playgrounds. Boasting the “largest and finest beaches outside the actual coast itself,” Sandy Beach Park sets the scene for summer fun. Picnic pavilions, restrooms, playgrounds, tennis courts and softball fields add to the attractions. Unlike Lake Wildwood there are no motor restrictions for boats on Lake Tobesofkee’s 1,750 acres where the bass, crappie, bream and catfish are waiting. For Georgia’s fish consumption guidelines see the link below.

Lake Wildwood’s serious anglers may wish to make a 10-mile drive north to Lake Juliette, also known as Rum Creek. This 3,600-acre reservoir is owned by Georgia Power and has two parks open to the public. Lake Juliette is strictly a quiet fishing lake holding largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, bream and yellow perch. No boats with motors over 25 horsepower are permitted. At the northeast end of the lake, Dames Ferry Park provides a campground with water, electricity, picnic tables, grills and the all important boat launch. At the northwest end of the lake, Holly Grove Park provides picnic tables, boat ramp and dock perfectly suited for an afternoon on the lake.

When residents of Lake Wildwood look for a change of pace they have the advantage of living within minutes of Macon, a modern city rich with history. Ancient temple and funeral mounds built by the Creek Indians and their ancestors can still be seen at Ocmulgee National Monument, east of Macon. Tours of Macon’s historic districts include antebellum homes and Civil War sites. Four colleges and universities lead Macon into a promising future with enrollments exceeding 50,000 students. With a metropolitan area population exceeding 230,000, Lake Wildwood residents have access to over 300 restaurants and 50 shopping centers, entertainment options include Macon’s Symphony Orchestra, Macon Little Theatre, multiple art galleries and museums. Whether you live in Lake Wildwood or choose a vacation rental around the city, Macon’s southern hospitality will have you returning again and again.

Reflective of Georgia’s Historic Heartland Tourism Region, Lake Wildwood is not new. The neighborhood has history, a sense of community and knows the importance of family. To be a part of a long-established community on a beautiful lake in sunny mid-Georgia is to be a part of something special. With over 1,700 homes in Lake Wildwood, real estate properties are readily available for sale and rent. Come join the fun; your neighbors are ready to welcome you home to Lake Wildwood.
