Mason Lake is a natural freshwater lake with an elongated shape located in Mason County, part of Washington state's Olympic Peninsula tourism region. Mason Lake is the largest and deepest lake in Mason County, which boasts a total of 118 lakes.
With its steep, rocky shoreline, Mason Lake is a favorite fishing location for largemouth bass, yellow perch, rock bass, and cutthroat trout. Coho salmon pass through the lake during the fall on their way to spawning grounds in Schumacher Creek, a stream that flows into Mason Lake at the south end. Summer-run chum salmon pass through the lake to spawning grounds in Sherwood Creek, the lake's natural outlet at the north end, which eventually flows into Case Inlet.
With summer temperatures in the 70s and winter temperatures in the 40s, Lake Mason is open and available for year round fishing, boating, jetskiing, and kayaking. Mason County also has five golf courses for golf enthusiasts, but do not worry about missing the water as most courses boast challenging water holes in addition to breathtaking views of the lakes.
The Mason Lake area was originally a summer vacation community with approximately 1000 permanent residents. Today waterfront homes are abundant on Mason Lake but many are still used as vacation homes or rentals to visitors. These homes range from large estates to small one room cabins. Some communities offer private waterfront parks and beaches just for their residents, but Mason Lake County Park is open to everyone and offers opportunities for swimming, picnics, and boat launching facilities.
The mostly level roads and trails in the communities and shoreline surrounding Mason Lake allow for easy strolls or bike rides to those who wish to spend some time off the water. Early morning mists around Mason Lake can give a magical appearance to the shores for the early risers who wish to take a morning stroll to hear the music of the bird calls as they wake for the day.
The area surrounding Mason Lake is mostly commercial timberland in various states of harvest. With the thick forest of trees and large watering access provided by Mason Lake, there is abundant wildlife for nature lovers to observe. These woods also offer the off-road enthusiast over 100 miles of challenging cross-country paths.
If you are seeking all the fun and excitement that a lake provides but with uncrowded small town appeal, Lake Mason is waiting for you!
