Map: Montedoglio Lake, Tuscany, Italy

Lake Montedoglio is nestled in the Province of Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy. Although Lake Montedoglio was created for irrigation and as a water source for drinking, recreational activities are abundant and include fishing, canoeing and windsurfing. Horseback riding, walking and mountain biking are popular along the shores of Montedoglio Lake.

Montedoglio Reservoir was created by impounding the Tiber River. Professor Filippo Arredi designed the lake in the early 1970s for the purposes of providing water and to produce hydroelectric power. Montedoglio Lake stretches from Pieve Santo Stefano to Anghiari and Sanepolcro, and when full it consists of 1,977 acres of water. Visitors of Montedoglio Lake will find the Tuscany landscape breathtaking with mountains looming in the background, and large forest and farmlands encasing the shoreline.

Anglers will enjoy the peaceful waters of Montedoglio Lake as they contently wait for a bite on their line. Sport fish species in the lake include black bass, eel, catfish, trout and pike. Carp fishing is very popular at Montedoglio Lake where there are both rudd carp and crucian carp. Carp have been known to weigh over 66 pounds when taken from the lake waters. Another method of fishing that is popular is fly fishing, and Montedoglio like is famous throughout Italy for this type of fishing. Along the Tiber River below Montedoglio dam, visitors may spot a number of anglers fly fishing for trout and grayling. The section of the Tiber River set aside for fly fishing requires a permit and government license. Since Montedoglio Lake is used for drinking water, boats allowed on the lake are limited to canoes, paddle boats and sailboats. This is a benefit to the anglers by enabling the waters to remain calm as they enjoy their time fishing.

Since Montedoglio Lake is situated in Tuscany, lake visitors can experience the countryside of Italy as they take guided tours or venture out on their own. Whether by car, bus, train or bicycle, tourists can visit nearby cities and towns where they can relive medieval and renaissance eras as they tour museums, art galleries and famous battle grounds. Visitors can travel through the well known cities of Florence, Arezzo and Assissi or take a trip to upper Tiber Valley where they will find olive and chestnut groves and acres of sunflower fields surrounding towns of Monterchi and Sansepolcro.

Visitors of Montedoglio Lake can become acquainted with local people and learn more of their culture while sightseeing. Each of the nearby towns and villages host numerous festivals and historical presentations. Visitors can take part in archery competitions or sample fine wine or cuisine offered at food and wine festivals.
