All About Bodi Lake, MI

Seated in Luce County of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, near the coast of Lake Superior, is the little gem called Bodi Lake. Bodi Lake is surrounded by sand dunes interspersed with swamplands, with conifers and a few cottages dotting the picturesque landscape. The shoreline surrounding its 306 acres is mainly gravel and sand. Bodi Lake’s maximum depth is 45 feet. Culhane Creek flows out of Bodi Lake when water levels are at or above normal elevation of 638 feet above sea level. A small unnamed creek flows into the lake from the east.

Bodi Lake is best reached via a 12 mile jaunt on County Road 500 north of M-123. Its biggest draw for tourists is Bodi Lake State Forest Campground. The rustic campground, with vault toilets and potable well water, has a boat launch, beach area, and a 1.25 mile hiking/biking trail. 20 campsites suitable for tents or small trailers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. And for visitors who want to venture beyond Bodi Lake’s shores, come prepared with Michigan trail maps for hiking, cross-country skiing, ATV, and snowmobiling adventures. Autumn has been described as particularly beautiful in the area.

Fishing is ample in Bodi Lake with walleye, northern pike, and bullhead inhabiting its waters. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has stocked yellow perch in the lake, with limited success in acclimatization.

Newberry, a cozy UP town, is the largest populace close to Bodi Lake. About 30 miles away by car, the town features several hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, and cabins for rent. Also nearby is picturesque Tahquamenon Falls State Park with one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. The spectacular Upper Falls on the Tahquamenon River are more than 200 feet across with a 50-foot drop. Downstream four miles are the Lower Falls, a series of five waterfalls that cascade around an island. Visitors can rent a rowboat to view the Lower Falls from the island. According to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Hiawatha built his canoe “by the rushing Tahquamenaw.”

For a genuine escape, Bodi Lake offers an interesting choice. With activities throughout the four seasons and a truly isolated location, Bodi Lake may be worth the trek for those who care to give civilization a rest.
