Ten Mile Lake is a 5,046-acre spring-fed lake located near Hackensack, in the northwest region of Minnesota. With 25 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 208 feet, the lake has much to offer when it comes to water recreation. Diving, snorkeling, swimming, trophy fishing, boating and water skiing can all be enjoyed on the lake. Other nearby recreation includes golf, tennis, hiking, bicycling, and hunting.
One of the deepest natural lakes in Minnesota, Ten Mile Lake is well known for its sport fishing. Northern pike are plentiful in the lake and range from 21 to 30 inches. Since 1997, Ten Mile Lake has a catch and release policy for northern pike 20 inches or longer. Walleye are also in abundance with fish ranging from 11 to 28 inches. Other fish species include black crappie, bluegill, bowfin (dogfish), brown bullhead, largemouth bass, lake whitefish, pumpkinseed sunfish, rock bass, smallmouth bass, white sucker, yellow bullhead, and yellow perch. Anglers can help maintain or improve the quality of fishing by practicing selective harvest. Selective harvest allows the taking of smaller fish, and encourages releasing medium- to large-sized fish. Releasing these fish back into the water helps maintain balance in the fish community and allows anglers the opportunity to catch larger fish in the future. Anglers should follow the Minnesota fish consumption guidelines (see link below).
There are a number of campgrounds around Ten Mile Lake with spacious sites for tent camping and RVs. Water and electric hookups are available at some of the sites. Most campgrounds have picnic areas, fire pits, bathrooms, showers, boat docks, boat ramps, and swimming areas. The typical camping season runs from May to October. Cabins and vacation rentals can also be found around the lake and in the nearby city of Hackensack.
During the warmer months, wildlife enthusiasts visiting Ten Mile Lake can enjoy hiking or biking along trails around the lake. You may catch a glimpse of some beautiful species of wildlife such as deer, timber wolves, coyotes, bobcats, bald eagles, fishers, loons and even an occasional black bear.
Winter on Ten Mile Lake offers the classic pastimes of snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing. You can rent an ice house on the lake and ice-fish the day away. Even in winter, walleye, perch, crappie, and panfish are plentiful. Visitors can also ride snowmobiles through the snowy wilderness on designated trails.
After spending a day of fishing and boating on Ten Mile Lake, consider a visit to the community of Hackensack. Located on the eastern shore of neighboring Birch Lake, Hackensack offers visitors convenient access to hundreds of Minnesota lakes, the Savanna State Forest and the Chippewa National Forest. Although a small town of approximately 300 permanent residents, it is still a bustling tourist area with many activities. Have a picnic lunch in the lakeside park or wander through the downtown area shops. The famous Paul Bunyan trail, consisting of over 100 miles of trail, is an excellent way to take a leisurely hike through the colorful autumn forests. If you happen to be visiting in late September, you'll want to catch the National Chainsaw Sculpting Competition. At the end of this three day event, these exquisite winning pieces of art are auctioned to the highest bidders. Larger cities of Brainerd, Grand Rapids and Bemidji are within easy driving distance from Hackensack and all make excellent day trips for the entire family.
With its quiet charm and unrivaled natural beauty, Ten Mile Lake is a great choice for your next family vacation. No matter what type of accommodations or activities you seek, you are sure to find the perfect spot on crystal clear water of the lake.
