Lake Locations: Canada - British Columbia, Canada -

Paddlers will find 266-acre Village Bay Lake a virtual paradise with its beautiful scenery, sandy beaches, small islands and hidden bays just waiting to be discovered. Village Bay Lake is part of a chain of lakes connected by narrow, shallow marshes navigable by canoes and kayaks only. The Main Lake chain of interconnected lakes forms the largest freshwater waterway in the Gulf and Discovery Islands in British Columbia, Canada. To get to Village Bay Lake, you will have to take a ten minute ferry ride from the Campbell River terminal on North Central Vancouver Island to Quadra Island. Once on Quadra Island, head north toward Main Lake Provincial Park. The incredibly beautiful drive will take you between three and four hours.

Nestled between Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia, Quadra Island is the largest and most populated of the Discovery Islands. Main Lake Provincial Park is located on the east side of Quadra Island and encompasses six lakes, the biggest being Village Bay Lake, Main Lake, and Mine Lake. The 8,745-are park is a popular destination for tourists, and is best known for its beautiful wilderness and its excellent cutthroat trout fishing. Hiking and wilderness camping attract nature lovers to the area along with over 72 species of birds and an incredible variety of wildlife.

The warm water temperature of Village Bay Lake makes it a great place for swimming. A sandy bottom boat launch is available for small boats only. Powerboats are permitted but are restricted to a 9.9 maximum horsepower rating. Wilderness camping is allowed in designated camping areas only. Most of these areas are only accessible by boat. There are no provincial campgrounds on Quadra Island, but there are a number of private campsites. Be sure to bring your own drinking water, as potable water is not available in the park. For those not into primitive camping, there are all types of vacation rentals over looking Village Bay Lake and within a short drive or walk from the lake.

Outdoor adventurists visiting Village Bay Lake will want to take full advantage of the recreational opportunities available on Quadra Island. Sea kayakers will be in heaven to have access to some of the best paddling around the island and beachcombers will love exploring the ocean shoreline. The waters around Quadra Island have resulted in some of the largest salmon ever caught on B.C.’s west coast. Colorful marine life and clear water off Quadra’s shores make the area perfect for scuba diving. Hikers and mountain bikers have over 100 miles of trails to choose from that offer some fantastic panoramic views of the island. There are also several other Provincial Parks on the island. Most of these can be accessed by boat as you make your way through the chain of lakes. Hiking trails will also lead you throughout the parks.

Although best know for its outdoor opportunities, the area surrounding Village Bay Lake has much to offer for sightseers as well. Many artists and craftspeople have made the island their home and display their talents in galleries and souvenir shops located throughout the island. The Quadra Island Studio Tour held in June allows visitors to tour galleries and studios run by painters, sculptors, photographers, carvers, spinners, weavers, glass blowers, potters, jewelers, blacksmiths, woodworkers, leatherworkers, and stained glass artists. Other events and attractions include a large famers’ market, the Quadra Island Community Centre, fine dining, live entertainment and no visit would be complete without a tour of the Cape Mudge Lighthouse on the southern tip of Quarda Island. For those who would like to island hop, ferries depart Quadra Island on a regular basis and travel between the Discovery, Southern Gulf, and Northern Gulf Islands. Each of these islands is a world unto itself with its own history, culture and character.

For those seeking a great outdoor adventure, the mild climate, pristine forests, endless paddling opportunities, and breathtaking scenery makes Village Bay Lake and Quadra Island a most impressive place to visit.
